EVAMME SUTAṀ: EKAṀ SAMAYAṀ BHAGAVĀ SĀVATTHIYAṀ
VIHARATI JETAVANE ANĀTHAPIṆḌIKASSA ĀRĀME, ATHA KHO
AÑÑATARĀ DEVATĀ ABHIKKANTĀYA RATTIYĀ ABHIKKANTA-
VAṆṆĀ KEVALAKAPPAṀ JETAVANAṀ OBHĀSETVĀ, YENA
BHAGAVĀ TENUPASAṄKAMI UPASAṄKAMITVĀ BHAGAVANTAṀ
ABHIVĀDETVĀ EKAMANTAṀ AṬṬHĀSI. EKAMANTAṀ ṬHITĀ KHO
SĀ DEVATĀ BHAGAVANTAṀ GĀTHĀYA AJJHABHĀSI:
如是我聞 : 一時, 佛在捨衛城,祇樹給孤獨園。爾時有一天人,於深夜分,身諸光明,遍照祇林,步近佛陀,詣前向佛頂禮,後立一旁。立於一旁後,天人以偈對佛說 :
Thus have I heard: at one occasion the Exalted One was dwelling in Savatthi at Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's park. A certain devata, in the far extreme of the night, her extreme brilliance lighted up the whole of the Jeta's Grove, approached the Exalted One. Having approached the Exalted One and revered Him, she stood to one side. Standing there to one side the devata addressed the Exalted One thus in verses:
BAHŪ DEVĀ MANUSSĀ CA | MAṄGALĀNI ACINTAYUṀ |
許多天人和人思索吉祥, | |
Many devas and men | have pondered on blessing, |
ĀKAṄKHAMĀNĀ SOTTHĀNAṀ | BRŪHI MAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
祈求平安(幸福), | 請(佛世尊) 為彼宣說,最高的吉祥。 |
longing for well-being | do tell them the highest blessing |
ASEVANĀ CA BĀLĀNAṀ | PAṆḌITĀNAÑ CA SEVANĀ |
遠離愚痴人, | 親近智慧者, |
Not to consort with fools, | consort with the wise. |
PŪJĀ CA PŪJANĪYĀNAṀ | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
供養於應供, | 是至上吉祥。 |
And to honour the honourable | This is the highest blessing. |
PAṬIRŪPADESAVĀSO CA | PUBBE CA KATA PUÑÑATĀ |
擇鄰安適住, | 往昔修福行, |
Living in a civilized country | Having made Puñña (merit) in the past. |
ATTASAMMĀPAṆIDHI CA | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
確立正志向, | 是至上吉祥。 |
And with oneself rightly guided | This is the highest blessing. |
BĀHUSACCAÑCA SIPPAÑCA | VINAYO CA SUSIKKHITO |
博聞善工巧, | 勤學於律儀, |
Ample learning and skill, | Being well-trained in discipline, |
SUBHĀSITĀ CA YĀ VĀCĀ | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
言語宜溫和 | 是至上吉祥。 |
And the speech which is well-spoken: | This is the highest blessing |
MĀTĀPITU-UPAṬṬHĀNAṀ | PUTTADĀRASSA SAṄGAHO |
奉養於父母, | 養護於妻兒, |
Support of mother and father, | Cherishing of wife and children, |
ANĀKULĀ CA KAMMANTĀ | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
處事不紊亂(糾紛), | 是至上吉祥。 |
Ways of work without conflict: jobs that are not left unfinished | This is the highest blessing. |
DĀNAÑCA DHAMMACARIYĀ CA | ÑĀTAKĀNAÑCA SAṄGAHO |
佈施及淨行, | 濟助諸親友, |
Generosity, living by the Dhamma, | And assistance to one’s relatives, |
ANAVAJJĀNI KAMMĀNI | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
不作諸惡業, | 是至上吉祥。 |
Deeds that are blameless | This is the highest blessing. |
ĀRATĪ VIRATĪ PĀPĀ | MAJJAPĀNĀ CA SAÑÑAMO |
戒除諸惡事, | 不飲諸灑類 (致使神智迷亂之物), |
Avoiding, abstinence from evil, | Refraining from intoxicants, |
APPAMĀDO CA DHAMMESU | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ. |
尊行於正法(不放逸), | 是至上吉祥。 |
Heedfulness in all things: with regards toqualities of the mind | This is the highest blessing. |
GĀRAVO CA NIVĀTO CA | SANTUṬṬHĪ CA KATAÑÑUTĀ |
恭敬與謙遜, | 知足及感恩, |
Respectfulness and humility, | Contentment and gratitude, |
KĀLENA DHAMMASSAVANAṀ | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
適時聞正法, | 是至上吉祥。 |
Hearing of the Dhamma: on timely occasions | This is the highest blessing. |
KHANTĪ CA SOVACASSATĀ | SAMAṆĀNAÑCA DASSANAṀ |
忍辱易受教, | 親見諸沙門, |
Patience, composure, | And sight of Samanas, |
KĀLENA DHAMMASĀKACCHĀ | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
適時而論法, | 是至上吉祥。 |
Discussing the Dhamma: on timely occasions | This is the highest blessing. |
TAPO CA BRAHMACARIYAÑCA | ARIYA SACCĀNA DASSANAṀ |
精進聖潔行, | 徹見四聖諦, |
Ardent effort, the divine life leading, austerity, celibacy, | Insight into the Noble Truths, Realising, Liberation |
NIBBĀNASACCHIKIRIYĀ CA | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
實證於涅盤, | 是至上吉祥。 |
And the realization of NIBBĀNA: | This is the highest blessing. |
PHUṬṬHASSA LOKADHAMMEHI | CITTAṀ YASSA NA KAMPATI |
心觸世間法, | (八風)不動不執染, |
Though in contact with the worldly states | Yet his mind is not shaken |
ASOKAṀ VIRAJAṀ KHEMAṀ | ETAMMAṄGALAMUTTAMAṀ |
離悲心安寧, | 是至上吉祥。 |
Griefless, dustless, secure: | This is the highest blessing. |
ETĀDISĀNI KATVĀNA | SABBATTHAMAPARĀJITĀ |
若能如是作, | 事事得無礙, |
Devas and men blessed as such | Are ever undefeated when doing these things |
SABBATTHA SOTTHIṀ GACCHANTI | |
隨處得安樂, | |
And well-being be with them wherever they go | |
TANTESAṀ MAṄGALAMUTTAMANTI. | |
是至上吉祥。 | |
This is the highest blessing. |
